In a bid to win a spot on the IFPC Inc 2 program as the second interceptor, Israel’s Rafael will throw its hat into the ring with Iron Dome’s Tamir interceptor, while Boeing and Lockheed say they may have contenders too.
The 11-month lease of US Army Iron Domes to Israel could be extended “depending on factors on the ground," Army acquisition head Doug Bush said today.
The joint venture plans to break ground on the new facility before the end of the year and start producing missiles in 2025.
"The Department of Defense is currently engaged in planning to support the provision of U.S. Iron Dome batteries to Israel," an official said.
Breaking Defense reporting near the border with Lebanon where the IDF presence is heavy with tanks, APCs and other vehicles driving along roads previously would have been packed with tourists and civilians, but are now deserted.
While the company says a prototype launcher is "nearly complete," in the meantime the Army is receiving Raytheon’s AIM-9X interceptor with plans to confirm that thermal management problems have been solved.
“This will be a great thing for the Medium Range Intercept Capability program and for the USMC, if this occurs,” Don Kelley, the Marine Corps Program Executive Officer Land Systems Ground-Based Air Defense program manager, said of a US production facility.
“If you think it's hard to buy a counter-UAS capability, go ask the contracting officer, ‘How do I buy three trees and have them planted?’” said Don Kelley, the Marine Corps Program Executive Officer Land Systems Ground-Based Air Defense program manager, referring to one particular unforeseen challenge to a program.
The Israeli military said the system helped defend successfully against rockets, missiles and drones.
